Wedding Dress Blues

Wow!!! That is the only thing that can sum up my day. I need to rant about everything that happened today and this is the best way that I know how. Well, as most of you know, I went wedding dress shopping for the first time today. I think my biggest mistake was starting at the place that I did. I went to David's Bridal. It started out just fine, but then took a turn for the worst really quick. I took three people with me who I know  wouldn't lie to me. My sister-in-law Cassie and two of my childhood friends, Amber and Victoria. It started out with the consultant asking me what I wanted for a dress. Well obviously she didn't listen to a word that I said because every dress that she showed me was NOT EVEN close to anything that I said. So my friend Amber started looking for me and found something more along the lines of what I was looking for, but apparently this pissed the consultant off and everything went downhill from there.

She was so rude the rest of the day. I mean extremely rude. At one point she said, "I hope this doesn't offend you, but next time you come in I wouldn't bring so many people." REALLY? I had three people, granted my nieces were there but they weren't like running around all over the place like little hooligans. They were sitting down coloring and when I would come out of the dressing room they would stand up and look at the dress, but they were not in any way being crazy. I was so mad after the comment that she made that I didn't even want to look at another dress. The worst part about the whole day is that every dress that I have seen on their website that I wanted to try on, they didn't have in a size that I would fit into.

I am a size 18. I am not that big and the fact that they didn't even have a big enough selection of dresses in that size is discouraging. Every dress that I went in there to try on, they didn't have in my size. They only came in an 8 or 10, which I understand is pretty average, but I feel like they are so insensitive to girls who aren't the average size. I mean when you go in they have hundreds of dresses and then they take your size and then say oh okay well here are the dresses that will fit you and there are maybe 30. I guess I just don't get why for some of the more popular dresses they can't carry the average size and a bigger size, so that girls like me can actually try on something that they love. I know, I am ranting. I'm sorry, but I am just so frustrated and the consultant didn't help at all. Has anybody else had problems with this? What did you do to find a dress that you loved that you could actually try on? If anyone has any advice on what I should do, please share. I am desperate at this point for some info. Well, thanks for listening to my rant. Hopefully the next outing will have a better result!

  1. Hello, I ran into your blog by accident and saw your predicament. I recently got married and I am above those average sizes so I know your pain. I finally decided that it is my wedding day and it is ok if you make a point to get the dresses and service you want. I started calling the places before I went dress shopping and I would tell them what I was looking for and the size so they could find something beforehand. I thought it made it easier for them and for me. Just remember dress shopping should be fun and try not to let bad service dampen your spirit.
    Hope you find the perfect dress!

  2. Erinn,
    Thank you so much for commenting! I am glad to know that there is something that I can do to make the situation easier. I have been stressing about it all weekend, because that is what I do best. Thank you so much for the advice and hopefully I will find the perfect dress!

  3. David's Bridal can be so terrible ~ I would definitely try smaller stores, they tend to have better customer service. I understand the draw of the lower price tags available at DB, but there are lots of little stores out there with good deals {there are even outlet type boutiques with great deals and great service} or if there's an event in your area this is a great charity http://www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/. Don't let this experience ruin it for you! {and if it makes you feel better, I usually wear size 4 and I couldn't fit into anything below a 10 at DB, so their sizes are WONKY}

  4. Yeah and the sad part is that I wasn't really even going for the draw of the price, but I really just thought that they may have more of a selection in my size because they have a plus size line. I thought there sizes were kind of weird too. They said I was in an 18 but every dress that I tried on was actuall big on me. I will definitely check into the Brides Against Breast Cancer. Thanks so much for the advice. It is much needed at this point! :)
