House Hunting Update

Just wanted to give everyone an update on our house search. Well, it isn't going very well. We have looked at 13 houses so far and put offers in on two of them but neither have worked out.

The last one that we put an offer in on was perfect. It was at the top of our price range so we offered the asking price with the concession that they pay the closing costs and apparently this pissed them off because they raised the price of the house the next day by $5000 which put it out of our price range. We are still a little bitter about this, but what can  you do. This was obviously not the house that we were supposed to get.

So our search continues. Hopefully all of this searching will pay off and we will find the perfect house that we are supposed to have. I fully believe that if it is meant to be than it will work out. I just have to keep telling myself that.

I wanted to share a few of the things that we have learned so far in the home buying process.

  • Research the neighborhood. We were ruling out neighborhoods because we weren't familiar with them. So our Realtor suggested that we go drive by the homes that we were wanting to look at. If we didn't feel comfortable just driving through them then it was a no go, but most of them we were very surprised.
  • Drive by the house that you are wanting to see. This has helped us tremendously. We have done this with almost every property just to see the neighborhood and to see the actual house and the property surrounding it. We have ruled out quite a few houses for the mere fact that they were squished together on a small cul de sac or the houses were just too on top of each other.
  • Remember that things can always be updated at a later time. A lot of the kitchens we have seen have been very outdated, but that also means that we can update them and make them what we want them to be later on.
  • Check to see if the appliances come with the home, because if they don't then you will have to front more money for appliances upon moving in.
  • Check to see if the windows are updated. Newer windows usually mean that you pay less in utilities.
  • The layout of the house is very important. If you don't like the layout, you won't love the house.
  • And remember that a can of paint can do wonders.
Obviously it is going to be different for everyone that is trying to buy a home, but this is just what we have learned. Hopefully within the next few weeks I will have some good news for you guys as far as our search goes. Fingers crossed everyone!

Sorry again for the lack of wedding posts this week. This house hunting thing has consumed a lot more of my time than I was expecting. I will be back with some next week though, I promise! Have a great day everyone!
